Navigating the city

Getting around Milano is really easy: you can walk to reach the main attractions, but if you need to cover longer distances you can use the extensive public transport network plus various types of rental vehicles and taxis. If you're travelling by car, here you'll find some really useful info for getting around the city.

Metro, tram, and bus

The metro, tram, and bus network in Milano is operated by ATM - Azienda Trasporti Milanesi. Check the website for the metro map and other useful information. The city is served by 5 underground lines: M1 Red, M2 Green, M3 Yellow, M4 Blue, and M5 Lilac plus numerous bus and tram lines.

Tickets can be used with no limitation on buses, trams, underground lines, and on the urban tracks of the suburban trains (Passante Ferroviario); it must be validated at the beginning of the journey and at any transportation change. There are several types of tickets:

  1. Single ticket, valid 90 minutes €2.20
  2. 24-hour pass €7.60
  3. Ticket valid for 3 days from the date of validation: €15.50
    • The ticket is valid until the end of the public transport service on the third day, i.e., at 3:45am (not at midnight). For example: the Thursday service closes at 03.45 a.m. on Friday. So, if you stamp your ticket at 00:01 am on Friday, you are still actually travelling on the Thursday transport service day, not the Friday one.
  4. 10-ticket pass: it cannot be used by more than one person at a time €19.50.

In Milano, public transport is full contactless. Payment by credit card is available on all buses, trams and trolleybuses of ATM network.
